Opening to the Miracle

Book coverMeditation begins to open up your life, so that you’re not caught in self-concern, just wanting life to go your way. In that case you no longer realize that you’re standing at the center of the world, that you’re in the middle of a sacred circle, because you’re so concerned with your worries, pains, limitations, desires, and fears that you are blind to the beauty of existence. All you feel by being caught up like this is misery, as well as enormous resentment about life in general. How strange! Life is such a miracle, and a lot of the time we feel only resentment about how it’s all working out for us.

  1. This reminds me of another quote from Pema: “Being preoccupied with our self-image is like being deaf and blind. It’s like standing in the middle of a vast field of wildflowers with a black hood over our heads. It’s like coming upon a tree of singing birds while wearing earplugs.” I love that quote.

  2. This is exactly how I feel right now… That life is working out perfectly for everyone else and not for me. If I go near them, I’m going to trouble them with my negativity; it will disrupt their perfection and make me feel lousy at the same time. When I’m in this state I keep myself sheltered away, to save everyone from the infliction. I work a lot and yearn to keep sleeping.

  3. To JessieFindsArt: My heart goes out to you. If you get a chance, check out the book or the CD recording of Pema Chodron’s “When Things Fall Apart.” Chodron’s books and recordings are the only ones that really helped me when I discovered them about three years ago. They have changed my life.
