Book coverMeetings with Remarkable Women: Buddhist Teachers in America, by Lenore Friedman

Though it’s now nearly 30 years old, this remains a great read—and it’s become perhaps even more fascinating as a kind of time capsule. On the one hand, you get to read about the women who were teaching Buddhism back when that was something extraordinary. On the other, you get an intimate look at some of the modern female ancestor figures (like Pema Chodron, Charlotte Joko Beck and Sharon Salzberg) back when they were a lot younger.
